Τhe Cyprus Radiomarathon is an annual fund-raising event which is now in its 20th year. Its aim is to raise funds for child with disabilities. The Radiomarathon effort began in 1990 in Cyprus when Laiki Bank Group joined together with the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, Cyprus’s largest radio network to begin a fundraising drive which they named Radiomarathon. Fundraising activities for Radiomarathon take place simultaneously in Cyprus, Greece, UK, and Australia. It has now grown to be one of the largest Greek-speaking charitable initiatives of its kind worldwide.

On Sunday, to mark the first day of this year’s event, the Presidential Palace opened its doors to children with disabilites and special needs, as part of the many functions that will take place during the 3 day fund-raising charity event for these children. The children had the opportunity to talk and lunch with President Demetris Christofias and his wife Elsi, and seemed to completely enjoy the organised events which included dancing, singing, games and magic tricks.

In her welcoming speech, Mrs. Christofias said ‘’This year Radiomarathon celebrates 20 years of existence. While 20 years ago, this institution was trying to make people aware of the problems of people with special needs, today it is fighting for their full integration into society. Radiomarathon is now an all encompassing social institution which has been embraced with love by the whole of society. The people of Cyprus supported the event through all these years, giving generously’’.

The Radiomarathon will be holding special fund-raising events around Cyprus on Monday and Tuesday. There will be 53 kiosks operating in every town for donations, as well as 14 piggy-bank cars which will be on tour to collect money from villages. During event there will also be marches, sport and other charity functions around Cyprus.

The Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) recently put out a press release to remind people who live in Cyprus, or are taking a holiday in Cyprus and whom use wheelchairs, that five more beaches have this year had a special wheelchair and plastic walkway fitted, that runs straight down to the water, in order to assist disabled people wishing to visit the beaches of Cyprus. The latest five beaches to be fitted with the special walkway are: Fig Tree Bay and Yianna Marie in Protaras, Ayia Thekla beach in Ayia Napa, Aktis Olympion (Olympia Beach) in Limassol and the CTO’s Dasoudi beach at Yermasoyia in the Limassol district. The designated areas for the walkways are adjacent to each beach’s lifeguard post.

The equipment was purchased by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) and given away free to specific municipalities. These new additions brings the total of Cyprus beaches with disabled access to 33, and will be much welcomed by both handicapped people and their carers. The CTO also stressed that most disabled access fittings are removed during the winter months to protect them from storm damage. This is usually from around October to March, and they get fitted back again around April. You can see the full list of beaches that have access and facilities for disabled on our cyprus beaches with disabled access page here. Also take a look at the weather and temperature in Cyprus on the left side of the page. At the time of writing it is a gorgeous hot and sunny day, time for the beach I think, see you there!
