The world cup qualifier played out at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia Cyprus on Saturday, which saw Ireland beat Cyprus 2 – 1. Kevin Doyle put the Irish ahead five minutes into the game, but Marios Elia levelled for Cyprus at 30 minutes. The score remained at 1 – 1 until the 83rd minute when Damien Duff crossed for Keane, who netted the game for Ireland.
The Cyprus coach Angelos Anastasiades, described the defeat to Ireland as the island’s “worst performance” so far. He continued; “It was a very bad game with no rhythm. Ireland had tried, due to the height, to play long balls into the area and that is what they did throughout the game. With their first set piece, they scored a goal which we should have dealt with while the second goal we should have also avoided and for me, our defending was amateurish. A fair result, would have been a draw. We felt that we could have won this game but we were also wary of fatigue especially in the midfield. I thought that my not being on the bench wouldn’t have been a problem but that was not in the case in the end because we were not disciplined. There are some things that they failed to do and I will need to address them with the players.”
Cyprus currently have five points from seven games in Group 8 and sit in fourth place one point ahead of Montenegro. Whilst Ireland have 16 points from 8 games in Group 8 and sit in second place below Italy.
After the game, the Irish celebrated around Cyprus in their traditional well behaved and jovial manner. ‘Freedom Homes Cyprus’ met up with a small crowd of supporters in a Limassol pub, on Saturday night. The atmosphere was great, and we chatted to a few of the Irish lads, some of whom admitted that the result was ‘lucky’ for Ireland. We did promise to publish a photo of Paddy and Paddy, two friendly Irish supporters from Dublin whom we met whilst enjoying the celebration, however our photographer had previously visited the Limassol wine festival, and perhaps this was the reason behind her forgetting to activate the flash on her camera, thus the photos did not come out. Our apologies go to the two Paddy’s. It was nice meeting you, and we hope you come back to Cyprus again soon.
