3rd August 2009

In an effort to meet its EU target of 13 percent of energy output being derived from renewable energy sources by 2020, and reducing its CO2 emissions, the Cyprus government has signed a contract for the construction of the island’s first wind turbine park.

The wind park, which will be constructed by D.K. Wind supply Ltd will be one of the biggest in the Eastern Mediterranean, and will be situated at the Orites region in the district of Paphos, between the villages of Pano Archimandrita, Kouklia, Souskio and Fasoula. It will consist of 41 wind turbines of 2.0 Megawatts each, generating a total capacity of 82MW.

The cost of the project is said to be 155 million Euro, and will be funded by European Investment Bank to the tune of 65 million euro, with the remainder funded by partnerships with other international banking institutions.

The project is expected to be completed by the middle of 2010, and will supply the Cyprus Electricity Authority with energy for the next 20 years at a cost of 0.166 euro per kilowatt hour (kwh).
