Could Greek Cypriots Reap Miss World and Mr. World Titles?

1st September 2009

Mr. England is a male spin-off of the Miss England beauty pageant, from which the winner goes on to represent England in the Mr. World contest, with the chance of taking ‘The World’s Most Desirable Man’ title and a $50,000 (£32,000) prize.

The Mr. England 2009 title was won by Greek Cypriot Andreas Kattou, aged 24. The contest was held on the same night as the Miss England 2009 contest, which was won by Rachel Christie from London.

Andreas, originally from Larnaca Cyprus, now lives in Rugby England, and works for his family's fish and chip shop; Fish Plus, which is in Bilton Road. At the beginning of this year, Andreas won the title of Mr. Rugby 2009, and was then invited to take part in the Mr. England contest, by its organizers, which set him on his course for the Mr. World contest.

Andreas claims not to take it all too seriously, and didn’t do much preparation for the Mr. Rugby competition, however he started going to the gym to work out after his call up for the Mr. England contest. He will compete against 80 other men in the Mr. World contest, where the search is on for the world’s most desirable man. The winner will not only be judged on good looks and charm, but will also need to compete in a number of other mental and physical tasks.

The sporting background behind Andreas will surely help him along in the physical challenges, for when he was 16 he played football for Cyprus against Belgium, and scored a goal. He also went on to captain the under 19’s team.

The Cyprus Mail recently published an interview with Andreas, where he was asked if he had a message for fans, he said “I’m a really down to earth guy and doing this for fun. It has been a great experience so far and it has taught me that you shouldn’t be shy, and that who you are is more important than what you are. I hope that doing this can encourage others and give them confidence.”

The Cyprus Mail also stated that the same philosophy is shared by Miss Cyprus, Chrystalla Tsiali, who will compete for the Miss World title at the same time as Andreas. Chrystalla’s personal motto is “Everything in life is a risk, so just be yourself”.

Freedom Homes Cyprus wishes both Andrea and Chrytalla the best of luck.
