A new all time high consumer demand was recorded this week by the Transmission System Operator (TSO) for electricity supply, this being the second time this month that consumers set a new record. The demand reached 1,098 MW, with the previous highest recorded amount being last week on 23rd July with a record high of 1,048 MW.
This should come as no surprise given that the temperature in Cyprus has hit 42c in inland areas in the past few days. The TSO is reported to have stated that Cyprus has sufficient electricity production to meet these demands with a maximum output of 1,176 MW.
What may seem a little bizarre is the fact that the hospitals are not seeing huge influxes of sunstroke or heatstroke victims as would be expected during the hot summer months, but they are seeing a daily stream of people with flu symptoms who are concerned that they may have H1N1 flu (Swine Flu). Nicosia hospital however, has stated that the vast majority of those being tested are not infected with the virus.
