The Limassol Wine Festival is a historical and hugely popular event which was first organised in 1961. Since then it has become an established annual event for merrymaking and fun. The citizens of Limassol are not the only participants; visitors come from all parts of Cyprus and beyond to take in the wonderful atmosphere, and of course to sample the free wine.
This year’s festival takes place in the Lemesos (Limassol) Municipal Gardens, situated on the east side of the town near the sea, from Friday 28th August for 10 days. An entrance fee of five euros per adult is payable at any of the three entrance points situated on the south side of the gardens, where you will see a giant statue known as Vrakas, a Cypriot village winegrower in his traditional local costume, which has become the symbol of the festival.
There will be pavilions set out on both sides of the main entrance belonging to the wineries of Lemesos (Limassol): ETKO, KEO, LOEL, SODAP, and LAONA, where visitors can taste all kinds of wines free of charge. All the wines are offered to visitors in unlimited quantities and is free of charge with the compliments of the Lemesos (Limassol) Municipality.
You can expect to see around 15,000 visitors every evening enjoying the Festival. Each and every one is sure to enjoy the happy and jolly atmosphere of people feasting on wine and delicious local dishes, which are at fixed low prices. There are also local dances and singing, as well as theatrical plays with comedy, humor and satire. Don’t worry if you don’t speak any Greek, you will still have a fantastic time.
