Turkish Cypriot Dialect Banned on TV and Radio

The so-called governing body which regulates electronic media in the occupied areas of Cyprus, the Higher Broadcasting Council (HBC), has forbidden the use of the Turkish Cypriot dialect on TV and radio. The directive is being actively enforced on broadcasting stations with immediate effect.<Read More>

Cyprus Biometric Passports

It is expected that the Cyprus Ministry of Interior will unveil a 3.2 million euro biometric passport project in 2010. EU rules which were passed by MEP’s in Brussels in January 2009, stipulate that all EU countries, should start issuing passports containing biometric elements - such as facial images and fingerprints - as of 29 June 2009, however EU states have until 2012 to fully implement the rules and current passports will remain valid for travelling for most countries until then.<Read More>

The hit (UK) ITV1 show ‘House Guest’ is producing a new series, but this time it will be filmed in Paphos Cyprus, and will be called ‘House Guest in the Sun’. The production team is already in Cyprus looking for five couples to star in the new series.<Read More>

Earhquake and Tornado hit Cyprus

A large tornado descended on Nicosia yesterday, along with large hailstones and heavy rain. At least 17 people were reported as injured, although none are believed to have sustained serious injuries.<Read More>

Cyprus v Ireland World Cup Qualifier 2009

The world cup qualifier played out at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia, Cyprus on Saturday which saw Ireland beat Cyprus 2 – 1. Kevin Doyle put the Irish ahead five minutes into the game, but Marios Elia levelled for Cyprus at 30 minutes. The score remained at 1 – 1 until the 83rd minute when Damien Duff crossed for Keane, who netted the game for Ireland. <Read More>

The Pafos Aphrodite Festival 2009

The Pafos Aphrodite Festival will put on its 11th annual opera production from 4th to 6th September. This year’s event promises to be "a lyrical spectacle with grand chorals, ballet, intense passion, sumptuous sets that carry the audience to the exotic place where the story takes place, rising to high intensity and complicated finales", the festival's producers stated. <Read More>

Could Greek Cypriots Reap Miss World and Mr. World Titles?

Mr. England is a male spin-off of the Miss England beauty pageant, from which the winner goes on to represent England in the Mr. World contest, with the chance of taking ‘The World’s Most Desirable Man’ title and a $50,000 (£32,000) prize. The Mr. England 2009 title was won by Greek Cypriot Andreas Kattou, aged 24. <Read More>
