Cyprus became an independant republic in 1960, a member of the commonwealth in 1961, and a member of the European Union in 2004. Cyprus still remains a divided island since the Turkish invasion in 1974. Turkey ilegally occupies approximately 37% of the island, along a line stretching from Morphou in the west, through Nicosia to Famagusta. The division line is known as the 'Green Line'.
